A keeper?

My partner was Samantha. I really didn’t know her that well, so I was completely clueless about what to make for her. In the beginning, we were both confused and didn’t really care to ask anything. She just told me she liked the sun and I checked her facebook profile, but still couldn’t think of anything! So I emailed her a list of random questions such as if you could have one superpower what would be and her favorite band and so on… In the end, I decided to create a watercolor abstract painting, with the use of bright summery colors. It was inspired by her life motto: Live, laugh, love! So I wanted to create something that really symbolized this and I decided to crumble it up to make it look old, but more so it showed that through rough times, she must continue to stay positive and cheerful.

Overall she’s a very outgoing girl with a colorful personality– which is shown in the painting. In the background, I painted a very faint CN tower and buildings to show that she is a downtown girl now! I considered drawing her as her favorite superhero, Batman, but I decided to go with the Live Laugh Love idea, because I wanted the “note” to be meaningful, and that’s pretty much my life motto too so I thought this would better represent her. Also, this “note” has endless meanings that can be brought out because of the fact that it’s expressive and ties into bigger things in her life. For example, her favorite band is City of Colour… which is another reason why I made the painting very colourful.

I personally liked the piece when I completed it but I was really nervous about showing it to Samantha. I wondered if she would like it or even if it represented her life motto at all! I expected her to either like it or act like she liked it. It turns out that she actually liked it and she said it was meaningful and that I put a lot of thought into it! Judging on her reaction, I think that she would keep it. Maybe she’ll hang it on her bulletin board (if she has one), fridge or stash it away in a box… who knows!
