Kinecting Between People

with 8 comments

Along Queen street in Toronto, during the christmas holidays, there was a building that the Microsoft franchise had purchased in order to market their new product the Xbox Kinect. This cutting-edge technology not only beat its competitors to the punch but also showed the world what motion technology can do. Being the “techie” I am, I could not resist stepping in for a little peek at this new gaming system. My cousin and I were able to test the Kinect right away and within a matter of seconds we were both in shock to what this system could do. Needless to say, right after playing I ran to the nearest Best Buy and picked it up and have been playing it ever since.

Selling in all major stores for 150 dollars, the Xbox Kinect has a built-in motion sensor camera that when you begin to interact with the game from six feet away, it generates a three-dimensional image of you and recognizes your movements which then is transferred to an avatar on your television. When you move your avatar moves, when you dance it dances, when you act crazy it follows your every movement. It is very exciting to see these new innovations, if kept up it will continually change the face of gaming forever because it is a system that allows the player to get up and use their whole bodies to participate in a game. In turn using your whole body, it is actually creating physical activity that people can have fun playing from the comforts of their home, take it from me when you spend ten minutes playing non stop you are sweating and have shortness of breath. This technology one can see is bringing us one step closer to having actual physical connections to our games, maybe even creating a three-dimensional space that surrounds the whole body, and mental space.

After having it for a few months I would recommend it to any family looking to have a good laugh. Believe me I have had my 7-year-old cousin play without flaw, to my 70-year-old grandmother play, it is a total blast and unique experience. If are considering the price is very worth it for the technology and if you have an existing Xbox 360 you can hock your Kinect to it without a problem. I am giving this product a 4 out of 5 because is does not have many games yet but the 2011 is still young who knows coming out next.
