Evin’s Sign Fun!

Pre-Exercise

It was a difficult process but after a while I finally came up with a saying: “Can you smell that?!” I first chose this because I found it to be hilarious and being the dramatic person that I am I know I can act it out and be slightly convincing. What I predict to happen is that many of the people passing by will look at me like a am a crazy person. I do not think I will get a very strong response because people will only be sniffing but I do want to get a few weird looks and maybe a spoken response that makes fun of it.

Post Exercise

Originally I choose this saying because I thought it was funny, then as I got to think about it there has been a few times when I have been walking down town and smelt something horrible. Usually from the sewers, garbage, or a select few who are long overdue for a shower. Therefore why not get people conscious of their city smells around them, or at least read the sign and take a sniff of fresh Toronto air?

I also hoped that my performance on the corner of Dundas and Younge, with the gagging, yelling “can you smell that,” and holding my breath gave people a few laughs to take home with them. Also so people did not think I was a complete crazy I wrote on the back of the sign saying that I was doing it for a class project that I flashed now and then to feel secure.

HAHA

Overall I guess I received the reaction I thought I would get, crazy looks, a couple of obnoxious answers, and a good laugh or two. I believe that not many people reacted to this sign or to many of the other signs is because the public is very desensitized to seeing people squawking about on Dundas square, that it has become a norm and so they kept walking without interaction. It could also be that I had a camera next to me or it could also be that my sign did make people, who read it, unconsciously sniff but didn’t show their reaction on their faces.

If I were to do this again I would probably make my message more interactive, for example “Clap if you believe in fairies,” then I might have gotten a bigger response. The color of the bristol board would also be changed, maybe I could have used a brighter neon color to grab the attention of others. I believe the location was perfect but I would defiantly do it on a warmer day when people are not freezing trying to get inside. It would be awesome to have some secret cameras to hide about to get people’s true reactions!!

  2. Lol I bet everyone who saw it just took a sniff of the air. Even if they just walked by. That was awesome, you got a lot of the responses you wanted!
