Navdeep’s Single Action Object!

with 3 comments

When I read about this assignment, I thought a zipper would be the perfect way to invite the action “pull”. So I decided to create huge lips with a zipper sealing them. Thinking about what the response of the object would be was very difficult. My first idea was to have rotten teeth revealed once the zipper opens. I was going to attach a cigarette onto the zipper to make the zipper easier to glide and to send the message out about smoking! However, instead I decided to make a tongue that rolls out once the zipper opens. This idea was fun and cute so I decided to go with it!

I tested my object on my friend Gagan. When she saw the lips she thought they were cute and was curious to see what the zipper would reveal. She instantly pulled the zipper and the tongue sprung out with some difficulty, which ruined the impact of the object. Overall she thought it was witty and it made her smile.

The zipper was ideal in the sense that a person would instantly know what to do with it. However, the tongue roll out wasn’t as smooth as I expected it to be, which ruined the effect. I should have used different material and possibly a better spring.

  1. Nav, I wish we could have seen it in person. It looks really well done. Awesome idea for the affordance!!

I think it was fair of you to say that your object did not fully work and by stating what you could have done better will only in turn make you a better artist in the future.
